Sep 2010 Very often you will find most people have an ordinary, plastic cheese grater in their kitchen. They are functional and do the job, but if you want something a bit more sturdy, efficient, longer lasting and easier to clean you might like to think about stainless steel cheese graters.
Stainless steel is regular steel that has added chromium; this gives it a protective film of chromium oxide preventing the steel from being exposed to the air and rusting. The history of stainless steel dates back to the early twentieth century and was met by sceptical amazement at the time. Although most of us would immediately associate it with cutlery, it also has a great many other, varied uses. In its different types it can be used in modern buildings, where the designer wants to achieve a shiny, futuristic look. Some pipes and other plumbing materials are also manufactured from stainless steel. There has been an increasing popularity in recent years for kitchen appliances to be made from, or at least have an outer layer of, stainless steel. This gives them a cleaner, more professional look and is a favourite in modern kitchens. The advantage of stainless steel cheese graters is, perhaps obviously, that they will not stain, rust and will be generally longer lasting than plastic ones and those made from other metals. It will also be dishwasher proof, ideal as cheese graters can be especially difficult to clean by hand.
There are models on the market that combine stainless steel cheese graters with other materials, such as wood. These consist of a wooden box with a stainless steel plate fixed to the top, giving a more traditional look but with the advantage of being a more effective grater. Other types include electric stainless steel cheese graters, these have a rotating plate which turns while the motor above pushes the cheese down, they can be a bit slower than doing it by hand but it is a lot easier, requiring less effort. Or maybe try a rotary grater, these come in either plastic or stainless steel, the plastic ones can be prone to breaking easily and will need replacing more often. Mainly because when you are using them you need to apple pressure with your hand to push the cheese down onto the grate. Purchasing a stainless steel version of these types of graters ensures their longevity, as well as being a more effective grater, as the teeth on the grate are a lot sharper than plastic and better at grating the cheese.
As stainless steel cheese graters are usually given a polished finish they can make a good gift, especially for someone who likes cooking and enjoys being in the kitchen. Many of them from the popular home shopping websites are able to be gift wrapped if you want them delivered directly to the recipient’s door.
